Good morning bondsmen,
Round two for compatibility PSAs, this time focusing on Mechwarrior 3 and Pirate's Moon. These are without a doubt the hardest to get running properly. The biggest culprit is the strange usage of z-buffer in the games that doesn't play nicely with our modern hardware. To tackle that obstacle I recommend you use the free dgVoodoo2 plugin. This program will emulate an older GPU and even let you play these games in your native resolution (3440x1440p widescreen in my case).
- To begin you will need to install Mechwarrior 3 and/or Pirate's Moon, and ideally both install to the same default directory. I recommend this because the folder structure is important to keep intact, I've inadvertently broken it 4 or 5 times myself.
- If you don't have a functioning disk anymore/hate slow install speeds you can get an ISO for Mechwarrior 3 here, and Pirate's Moon here. Make sure to download any applicable patch files. If you need imaging software for the ISOs you can grab PowerISO here, for those new to ISOs here is a demonstration about mounting.
- Once everything is installed (you may need to use administrator rights to do so) patch the games with any applicable fixes. 1.2 is the current official build of the game, the patch is available in the download link above, as well as here (credit to u/Plokite_Wolf)
- Next you'll want to grab dgVoodoo2 from here. Grab the 2.53 release about halfway down on the lefthand side. Once it is downloaded copy everything from the MS folder (3 files) to the folder where your Mechwarrior 3 executable is, AS WELL AS where your Pirate's Moon executable is. Critical step, also copy the dgVoodoo2 configuration executable to both of those places.
- Next you need to apply a framerate limiter to the game, or else it will run super fast and APCs will literally bounce into orbit. Rivatuner is my goto, you can get it here. Rivatuner is bundled with MSI Afterburner, install both then specifically launch Rivatuner (start menu > search bar > rivatuner).
- Once it opens you should see a list of programs on the left, find the executable for Mechwarrior 3 and select it. Press the plus sign/cross button at the bottom, and in the right hand side at framerate limit set it to 60 (maximum I recommend).
- Now before you play the game go back to your install directories and launch the dgVoodoo2 config executable. Click the directx tab on the top right, from this menu set your resolution and force AA. Also uncheck the watermark if it bothers you.
You should be ready to play at this point if all steps were followed correctly. If the game runs wildly fast ensure that rivatuner is open, it has to be running in the background everytime you play. If you get weird graphical anomalies ensure you patched the game and that dgVoodoo2 and the 3 MS files were correctly copied to your installation directories where the Mechwarrior 3 executable lives. Lastly music doesn't seem to work for me, I recommend you use a youtube looper to play the soundtrack. It's a very simple OST, but the music does add good ambiance.
Hope this helps, if you have any trouble post below and I'll see what I can do. I'll try to write up Mechwarrior 4 compatibility if people want help.

A stomping great MechWarrior sequel.
There was some worry when the BattleTech license passed from Activision to MicroProse, as people wondered what was to become of their beloved giant-robot game. MicroProse initially planned to have FASA Interactive develop MechWarrior 3, but technical problems have delayed that project until 1999. Needing something a bit sooner, MicroProse pushed FASA’s project back to MechWarrior 4, and contracted Zipper to develop MechWarrior 3. It was all rather confusing.
Luckily, things seemed to have worked out in the end. MechWarrior 3 honors the tradition of steady improvement by weighing in as the best Battletech game at that point. From the moment the game starts it is evident that the people behind tha license treated it with the same respect as Activision, and you’ll be glad to know it retains that familiar MechWarrior feel. From the HUD to the mission objectives to the overall visual style of the game, there is enough of Mechwarrior 2 and Mercenaries in the game itself to make the change in publishers irrelevant.
Ready For Duty
The single-player campaign is broken down into four “operations” of four to six missions each, for a total of 20 missions. The missions are fairly lengthy, but no more so than those of X-Wing Alliance. Four instant action maps and 8 multiplayer maps help sweeten the pot, but they are not really a replacement for another 12 campaign missions. The lack of an in-mission save feature adds to play time, but not in a good way. Few in number though they may be, the missions are all well crafted.
Of the changes that the game does feature, almost all are improvements. Without making the game significantly more complex, Zipper has improved on the “sim” feel of the Mechwarrior games to a great degree. A number simple but very useful additions to the interface contribute to this. Osho awareness pdf. Radar now features multiple modes; active radar works as it has in past games, but passive radar makes your Mech more difficult to detect at the expense of reduced range (shutting down entirely is still the most effective way of eluding enemy sensors).
The targeting reticule can be expanded into a small but effective zoom view that is so useful for long-distance targeting that players will wonder how they ever got along without it. Aiming options have been expanded as well—the traditional torso twist is still a vital combat element, but now players can also “unlock” the targeting reticule and aim it independently of torso orientation via mouse or joystick.
Weapon locations play a larger role in this aiming mode – it is impossible to aim left with a weapon mounted on a Mech’s right arm short of torso twisting in the appropriate direction. A new twist has been added to heat management as well – Mechs now feature coolant reserves that can be dumped to instantly reduce heat to zero. Download aerofly 2 for pc game. The catch is that the reserve only holds enough coolant to allow players to do this three times before refilling at the Mobile Field Base.
One thing that will not create logistical headaches (not in a bad way, at least) is the game’s salvage engine. Windows server 2003 r2 standard. While players do not earn money for completing missions, they do gain salvage and new ‘Mechs that can be carried in the MFB and used to augment offensive capabilities of both the player and AI lancemates. Engineer wannabes will be pleased to see that Mech building is still a vital element in the game. It is quite easy to spend more time in the Mech Lab than you do in the missions, and with 900 tons of salvage to work with, the Lab is a tweaker’s dream come true.
In all, MechWarrior 3 has all the right touches in all the right places, and it would be even better if the campaign mode were longer. A few expansion packs are underway, extending the play value to a game that certainly deserves it.
